  • Do you have any baby name pet peeves?

  • I guess we all have some...

What are yours? Specific names, or general name categories/styles?

For example, it irks me to see Johnathan and Aiden. The correct spellings are Jonathan and Aidan. It's a very simple thing, I know, but I guess that's the way pet peeves are.

Another pet peeve, a more general concept, is "tryndee" spellings. It's under the false concept that it makes the name more unique. It's the same name as it's origin - it sounds EXACTLY the same; it's just more difficult to remember the spelling.

Boy name on girls. What?? Masculinity is required to be strong? I didn't think women had to emasculate themselves to appear to have some strength and respect.

These are just mine. What are yours??

  • I absolutely hate made up names. It's almost as if someone fist-smashed the keyboard.
"Hey! I'll think I'll name my baby Aienclunwa!"

Also, naming after objects or things.
Rain, Sun, Apple, Desk, Bowl, Lyric, Speak, Chaos, Calamimity!

A friend of mine is expecting a baby boy. She wanted to name him Caleb but didn't like how it was spelt CaLEB incase this 'offended Lebonese people'. So instead made up the spelling Kaelab.

I don't understand why anyone would anyone want to burden their child with a name like that for the rest of their lives?

  • the whole, Morgan, Madison,Landen, anything that sounds like someones last name.

  • I hate names like Cadden and Jayden and anything that sounds like a family name but actually isn't. They usually sound comical and snobby. And I hate trendy names like Madison for girls. Finally, I can't stand all these double names. Not the classic kinds like anna katherine or mary elizabeth, but Madison Rayne or Malia Carole or crap like that.

  • My name pet peeves are many and varied, but a few big ones include:

    1. Boys' names on girls and vice versa. (Addison, Madison, Mason, etc.)
    2. Boys' names spelled girly (Tymothee, Braydin, etc.)
    3. Names that sound like someone made them up: Braiden, Caeden, Kylor, Brinley, etc.
    4. Convoluted spellings in an attempt to be unique: Breyonna (Brianna?), Jaxon, Paxton, Jayde (and all variations), etc.
    5. People who name their kid something so that they can give a cutesy nickname. E.g. Sebastian becomes "Bastion" (wth?), Nicolas becomes "Niko" ,etc.

  • oh em gee i hate when people spell their kids names wrong just so they can be unique i hate it soo much

my name is Devanne its said liek Devin im a girl

my sisters is Khayla said liek kayla

my cousins is kodi - is a girl too

i just hate it i dont get the point in doing that

  • Yes, Its the stupid parents who come up with these weird names for children, they all sound so cutesy and funny, but parents don't take into consideration that the kid has to walk around the rest of their life with a dumb name, and possibly made fun of because of it.

  • My pet peeve on baby names is when people choose a name with a "cutesy" nickname to use. I absolutely hate nicknames. Why choose a beautiful name and then call a child something different. So stupid.

  • I hate the name 'jamie" for a girl. I think it's tacky and ugly and boyish.
I also hate 'johnnie' for a fgirl. also a boy's name that should never be a girl's name.
I hate "Wendi" instead of wendy, I hate hick double names like 'cari-Jo" or 'Debi-sue" (I knew 2 girls wh owere sisters with these names, got made fun ofall the time for it)

  • I have a few, some of them are the same as yours!

I love how you call it "tryndee," I've never heard that before, but that's the main one I have a problem with. Some spelling changes are fine. Maire, for instance can be used as an Irish way to spell Mary. Catherine, Katherine, and even Kathryn (I know a 91 year old with this spelling) are fine. Things like that.

I mean, there are always exceptions. But spellings that stray too far from the source make me crazy. I hate to see my name butchered. CaitlĂn is the proper spelling and koit-leen is the proper pronounciation. In America, its changed to Caitlin and pronounced cate-lin. That's all well and fine. The thing is, it's the Irish spelling of the name Cathleen, which itself if a diminutive of Catherine. So when someone spells it Kaytelynn, they remove it so far from its source, and dispel of any and all of its history, it makes me very sad.

I also agree with another person here with the nicknames. I think if someone wants to call their kid Chuck or Tobey or Cath or Lainey that they should name their kid Charles, Tobias, Catherine, or Elaine.

I have to say, though, again, that there are exceptions. My name for instance is a form of a nickname for Catherine, and I'm ok with it.. I can't think of any other examples right now, but I'm sure there are.

I'm all worked into a tizzy now about trendy spellings that I can't think of anything else!

Great question! It really got me thinking.

Edit: I just remembered one! I don't like last names as first names very much at all. There are always exceptions, as I said, but I generally think its a bad idea.

  • NEVAEH just irks me!!!!!
Really bizarre spellings are just not fair to the child!
APPLE is a fruit not a girl's name!

  • Backwards names are one of my biggest pet peeves (I guess that could fall under your trendy spellings category!). I know a handful of Nevaehs (Heaven), I know a Traeh (Heart pronounced Tree-uh), a Enuj (June pronounced En-ooh), and a Legna (Angel pronounced Lee-nuh).

Names of objects generally bother me. Like Clementine (fruit!) or Serenity (it's the name of a urinary incontinence pad!)

    Also...APOSTROPHES. I hate apostrophe names with a passion! D'Anna, K'lee, L'aina, etc.

  • Just like u I can't stand when people change the spellings of a name it just makes them look illiterate.

Can't stand how so many people are spelling
heaven backwards (nevaeh and then they try to pronounce it ne-vay-ah) Hello am I the only one that thinks it's completly stupid?

I don't like names that are common and trendy.

And last but not least I don't like when people name their kids something that sounds like ur calling ur pet.

  • I can't stand any "Aidan" sounding names. I also can't stand when they are spelled so differently that you have to tell people how the name is pronounced. I'm also getting really sick of the name "Bella" and all variations of it. And naming a kid a nickname, instead of the full name, why would you put "Bob" on your son's birth certificate instead of "Robert" (just an example). "Nevaeh" gets on my nerves as well.

  • I don't like the constant use of names like "Aidan" or "Haden" or "Kaden". I'm sick of -en suffixes!
just get on with it and pick new popular names!
Also odd spellings of trashy names, i.e Kandeigh.
AND when people use Ys at inappropriate places in names! Like Madysyn or Collyn.
    I just don't like it.
    -Tila.
ps. lmao almost got carried away :P

  • I cannot stand the weird spellings and cutesey endings like "ie" or "ye". Lindsie, Kayleigh, Brylee, and other ridiculous names like that.

    Spell it right, people! Jeesh.

Also, I can't stand boys names for girls. Or weird ethnic names for children who are not first-generation immigrants.

  • Really plain names like John or Michael. Or strange names like Orion. Its okay to be unique, but theres a clear line between unique and bizarre.
