"Louie Down On the Beach" could have used a little reflected light on his shadowed side, and "Daydreaming"'s face wouldn't be so flat and gray if you had used a fill light to brighten her face a little.
A fill light can simply be a large piece of white poster board that reflects the natural light you're working with and will give just enough light to the subject, without destroying the natural shadows (unlike a flash).
