What can I plant in my garden in winter? In upstate NY?
Should I just start growing things in jars? Will they die, if I plant them in jars inside the house? I kinda want something to plant in my house as well, but nothing toxic as I'm having a baby and I have cats. (Even though the cats won't be able to reach them.)
You could still plant garlic as long as your soil isn't frozen, you could also plant spring bulbs like daffodils, tulips, crocuses, etc.. There are no other things that can be planted now and survive the winter without using a greenhouse and having a lot of gardening experience and knowledge.
if you start garden plants inside now they will either die before you get them out or be far too big to transplant in may/June (That is when most people in your area start gardens).
I start my transplants in Mid April to be transplanted in May/June. they require artificial lighting (I use florescent shop lights)b as veggie plants need at least 13 hours of light to grow well and in winter and a lot of the spring we get far less than that.
