  • What material are turbochargers made of? How do you maintain turbochargers?

  • Keep good oil in the car, they use the engine oil to lubricate the bearings. Not sue what they are made of though, I have no idea.

  • They're made from different materials based on application and quality. Mostly, they're made with an aluminum housing with high alloy steel internals. There are some units with ceramic or titanium components. It is hard to give a general answer.

To maintain a turbo that is connected to your engine's oiling and cooling systems, you must change your oil on time and use a high quality oil. You must maintain your cooling system meticulously. You can drive without warmup for normal driving, but if you're going to really put your foot in it, make sure you're fully warmed up first. Make sure you give it a few minutes at idle before you shut down to pull the heat out of the turbo. Other than that, keep your air duct sealed up tight, keep your intercooler free of debris, and keep your wastegate/blowoff valve properly adjusted.

  • The outer housing is usually made of cast iron, while the turbine, compressor, and shaft are made of high quality steel. The best way to take care of the turbo is to let the engine idle for a minute or two before shutting down after a hard run. Don't overheat the turbo by running it for extended periods of time at high boost (watch the pyrometer if you have one). Use a high quality motor oil (this means no Pennzoil, Quaker, and cheap store brand motor oils). Change your oil at 2000 to 3000 mile intervals. That's about all you can do to take care of the turbo.

  • depends on manufacturer/type.

    hot side housings; cast iron
    cold side ; cast aluminum
    center housing usually cast iron
impeller usually stainless or high carbon steel
bearings can be as simple as an oil bath bushing or as exotic as ceramic ball bearing.

there isn't a whole lot of maintenance other than a properly tuning the engine it is mounted to.

  • The intake side turbine can be aluminum, a steel alloy or ceramic. The exhaust turbine is a steel alloy or ceramic. The intake housing can be aluminum or a ferrous alloy. The exhaust housing is often cast iron.

No maintenance, just make sure that it has plenty of oil.
